Why Can't Angelina Jolie Let Her Daughter Shine?

Is Angelina Jolie dressing her daughters poorly on purpose so they don't outshine her?

This week, Angelina Jolie walked the Tony Awards red carpet with her 15-year-old daughter, Vivienne Jolie.

Angelina, 49, stunned in a green velvet Atelier Versace gown to match Vivienne's loose-fitting green vest and dress pants. The teen opted for a more masculine attire, similar to what her older sister Shiloh, 18, used to wear on red carpet premiers when she was younger.

But because Vivienne's outfit was lackluster and tomboyish compared to her mother's, many felt that Angelina was to blame. Maybe Angelina doesn't want her daughters to shine, as others have theorized. @LadyFaceIII on X/Twitter wrote, "Older lady tries to outshine her own daughter."

"Very weird that many celebrity women famous for their hyper feminine beauty like to turn their pretty daughters into drab tom boys sans a drop of glamour. Mirror mirror on the wall…." tweeted @KeenanPeachy on the platform.

"Jealousy with daughters, weird obsession with sons. See it all the time," another man wrote.

Angelina arguably has the best stylists in the world...so why doesn't she seem to utilize them for her daughter? Is it truly because she wants the limelight all to herself? Perhaps it's because she decided not to pressure them to look a certain way, like Bella and Gigi Hadid's alleged almond mom, Yolanda Hadid, who seemed very strict about her daughters' diets.

Others noted that Vivienne was old enough to dress herself and that it's typical of young teens to rebel against their parents. "Some daughters rebel against the impossible beauty standards and expectations of their glamorous moms," one X user wrote.

"eh, I definitely went more tomboy/modest to kind of push back against/differentiate from my extremely feminine mom," added @selentelechia. Indeed, I had a tomboy phase growing up and chose unflattering outfits, too, but I'm glad my mom allowed me to express myself.

This is not the first time Angelina was slammed for allegedy dressing her daughters in boys' clothes. Shiloh, 18, grew up wanting to be called "John" and wore suits. “Shiloh, we feel, has Montenegro style,” Angelina said about her daughter's style. “It’s how people dress there. She likes tracksuits, she likes [regular] suits. So it’s a suit with a tie and a jacket and slacks, or a tracksuit. She likes to dress like a boy. She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.”

"I think she is fascinating, the choices she is making," she told Reuters. "And I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not. I think that is just bad parenting."

Shiloh eventually grew out of her John phase and appeared in an elegant black dress on the red carpet in 2022. Everyone was stunned by her beauty.

Meanwhile, Angelina's daughter, Zahara Marley Jolie, has always worn dresses at events.

Still, it is strange that there's a trend in Hollywood of celebrities with seemingly nonbinary children, and Megan Fox has faced similar allegations of forcing her sons to wear dresses.

I don't think Angelina is trying to sabotage her daughters per se. It appears she's taken the "off hands" approach regarding her children's clothes. In a new interview, the Eternals actress spoke about listening to Vivienne. "Susie wrote this beautiful article called Teenagers Are Real, and it was really [a] young person saying, 'Listen to teenagers,'" she said. "You know, really listen to what they have to say and don't simplify things for them, don't not talk about the hard subjects with them. I think it's very important that a lot of young people see this, so they can really think and feel and discuss all these very heavy and very real conversations and what gets you through, which is your friends, your family, something to believe in, all of that."

Given the culture of Hollywood, it makes sense how her two daughters would enact the behavior described as "gender non-conformists." Has Angelina taught them about femininity or womanhood? It seems not. But at least she's not giving them puberty blockers.
