What’s Your “Christmas Party” Style Personality?

Christmas is the season of giving. Giving “all dolled up and somewhere to go,” that is. But which main character style personality are you? (Hint: you may be more than one.)

At any given Christmas party, there are as many different style personalities as there are types of Christmas cookies. An entire article could be written about the latter (don’t even get me started), but the former is what brings us together today. (May there be a cookie article forthcoming. We can only hope.)

Returning to our more in vogue subject matter, look around at your next Christmas party, and you’ll likely see it all, as far as style goes: vintage vixens, cottagecore angels, festive minimalists. Fanciful aesthetics will abound. This is because Christmas parties, via their explicit instructions to dress up (and thus assume main character energy), have a way of amplifying your aura and bringing out parts of your personality that aren’t front and center on a daily basis. Parts of you that you maybe haven’t tried out before. Parts of you that you didn't even know were there. Buried under work/school deadlines and daily responsibilities, there were shiny, mysterious sides to your personality that had never before seen the sun. Until, that is, you received a certain festive invitation, all tied up with a bow.

In this respect, the average holiday party isn’t that different from a typical Halloween party. It’s the perfect excuse to dress up, go full glam, and try on a more exciting version of yourself. Because there’s an expectation to go all out, no one really bats an eye if you show up in a floor length evening gown sparklier than your prom dress. (“She must be really festive!”)

But which main character style personality will you be this holiday season? Again – just like the cookies – so many options. As we go through them in detail, try opening the pandora’s box that is the unexplored depths of your soul. You may be surprised at what you find.

Vintage Vixen

The vintage vixen is an antique soul with retro style who looks 10/10 in a fit ‘n flare and speaks her mind with passion. She knows what she wants, and she goes after it. Which is basically to emulate the stunning Blake Lively in Age of Adaline as often as possible. The wisdom of a 90-year-old with 20-something genes. (Blake was on to something there.) The vintage vixen might arrive at the annual Christmas party in a tulle salmon gown adorned with ribbon rosettes and matching hair accessories or a 1900s dressing gown in dreamy seafoam silk. Either way, she’ll definitely be ready to jitterbug.

Cottagecore Angel

The cotttagecore angel is as sweet as freshly baked cinnamon bread, and, in fact, is probably pulling a loaf out of the oven as we speak. Busy making everything around her beautiful, she’s a lover of slow living, and is never without copious amounts of fresh pine. Everything you see in her home is locally sourced, homemade, and simply beautiful. At the holiday party, she’s wearing something straight out of Jane Austen’s Emma and has her hair in an intricate mermaid braid. If asked for an essential oil remedy, she’ll respond with “which one” and offer up an impressive collection, which she keeps on hand at all times.

Anthropologie Long-Sleeve Sheer Ruffled Tunic Dress, $118

Anthropologie Cottage Core Charm Necklace, $54

Jeffrey Campbell Aurora Flats, $138

Morning Lavender Elle Half Moon Straw Tote, $64

Winter Wonder Glam

Ms. Winter Wonder Glam is not your typical “in the club” holiday queen. No cheap bodycons for this glamor girl. She’s an icon in the same vein as Martha May Whovier from the live-action How The Grinch Stole Christmas – a true Christmas legend. Made famous by classic holiday movies and YouTube makeup tutorials, Ms. Winter Wonder Glam loves all things sparkly and lowkey attempts to outshine the star atop the Christmas tree each year. Her hair routine could employ a small village, and she’ll no doubt wear something truly spectacular to the party – all fire engine red or smothered in velvet. It’s not superficial, though, she just likes to look good – and she looks good doing it.

For Love & Lemons Tia Mini Dress, $259

NBD Cecily Mini Dress, $278

Dee Ocleppo Bow Pumps, $295

Anthropologie Crystal Collar Necklace, $68

Maeve The Frankie Clutch, $78

Twee Snow Queen

The twee snow queen is reminiscent of your favorite school teacher or crooner for the local folk band. Lover of jumpers and anything plaid, she wears her hair loose and softly curled or tied up in a bow. Excessively girly and uber-talented, at the party you’ll most likely find her writing a note to the host in calligraphy, or teaching the young ones a Christmas round. If you find yourself reaching for something with a Peter Pan collar this holiday season, the twee snow queen may be your alter ego.

Free People Bennett Oversized Bow, $38

Old Money Muse

Old Money Muse shows up to the party with the biggest furs and the smallest purse (a feminine paradox). Often the girl who you just know is from Connecticut, she’s as classy, smart, and gracious as they come. Her shiny locks curled in perfect waves, she knows how to play the part of both host and guest – whichever the occasion requires. Raised to protect the family name, she exudes luxury, but does it quietly, as any respectable rich girl would.

Schutz Say Yes Pointed Heels, $178

Anthropologie Triple Strand Pearl Choker Necklace, $68

Festive Minimalist

The festive minimalist is the ultimate Christmas cool girl. She wouldn’t be caught dead in anything red or green, so she shows up in a silky ivory gown or an open-back mini dress. She’ll pass on the hors d'oeuvres – but not the drinks – and gets busy when the music comes on. Always wearing the latest crystal-bow-encrusted heel, she’ll take them off at the end of the night when the valet brings around the car and promptly speed home to her giant beige apartment and fur throw duvet.

Closing Thoughts

Picking a style personality for your next Christmas party is like choosing which cookie to put on your plate after dinner (nearly impossible). Go with the indulgent winter wonder glam, sweet twee snow queen, or the cool as a cucumber festive minimalist, and you really can’t go wrong. Or, taste the rainbow by trying on a different one each night. As long as you serve it up with a cold glass of eggnog, you’ll pull it off with ease and leave a very merry woman. Bottoms up!
