The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is under fire after calling it a “great honor” to have President Donald Trump at this Sunday’s big game. The backlash comes as no surprise, given Trump’s history with Kelce’s girlfriend, Taylor Swift – and how easily the internet collectively loses its mind over everything.

At a press conference on Wednesday, a reporter asked Kelce about Trump’s upcoming appearance at the Super Bowl. It will be the first time a sitting president has ever attended the event. “No matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life,” he said. “It’s a great honor. Having the president there – it’s the best country in the world – and that’s pretty cool.”

Given Trump’s past remarks about Swift, including his “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT” post on Truth Social last year, fans weren’t exactly thrilled with Kelce’s comments. Some Swifties feel that Kelce is prioritizing optics over loyalty. But is it really that serious?

On X (formerly Twitter), one user criticized the athlete for what they perceived as a lack of awareness, writing, “Trump ripping apart the foundations of our country but Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce excited to throw a ball in front of him for a couple hours…”

Another user posted a scathing tweet, writing, "Imagine saying it's an 'honor' that the fascist rapist president who publicly despises your girlfriend will watch you play football. The same girlfriend who has made you and your family millions of dollars richer in the last two years. F*ck Travis Kelce.

Over on Reddit, the frustration continued. One fan questioned Kelce’s priorities, saying, “It’s a great honor to host someone who insulted your girlfriend directly????” Another user took it a step further, arguing that Kelce has the platform and privilege to speak out but chose not to. “Gross!!! There are celebrities with far less security & support than Travis Kelce who have spoken out against Trump. I'm not expecting him to go full AOC, but he's one of the few celebrities who might actually have enough money and fame to stay safe from Trump/Musk's rage, and it’s disappointing to see him cave in with a milquetoast answer like this.”

Some fans were quick to defend Kelce. “Am I supposed to give a f**k if Travis Kelce said playing the biggest game in his career in front of the president of the United States was an honor?” someone wrote on social media. “You don’t have to agree or like Trump to understand what Travis was saying. Y’all spin everything in a negative way.”

Patrick Mahomes Responds

Kelce’s teammate, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was also asked about Trump’s attendance. “It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president,” he said. “Someone that is at the top position in our country.”

This isn't the first time someone in Swift's circle has faced backlash for speaking positively about Trump. Last summer, Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, was accused of being a secret Trump supporter after liking an Instagram post about his 2024 platform. The backlash was immediate, with critics labeling her “privileged” and “misogynistic.” Unlike Kelce, who offered more of a neutral response to Trump’s Super Bowl attendance, Brittany fired back, calling out the “mob mentality” of online critics.
