The Biggest Fashion Trends You Can Expect To See In 2024
If there’s an industry that likes to plan ahead, it’s the one that deals in dress codes, and 2024 has already got its lookbook. We’re detailing next year’s major fashion trends so you can plot your It Girl takeover, posthaste.
This year is all about up-leveling. After a chaotic 2023 filled with strawberry girls, Barbie world, and a multiplicity of -cores, most of us are moving past the frenzied aesthetic merry-go-round and onto fine-tuning personal style. We’re giving ourselves permission to abstain from the revolving door of monthly (sometimes weekly) microtrends, opting instead to lean into what works for us as individuals.
That being said, an unchanging characteristic of style is that it evolves over time. Shifting trends are inevitable – a reflection of culture and an unspoken language we use to communicate. And while this doesn’t mean that we’re bound to trend, it does leave room to update according to le mode du jour. So even once you settle on personal aesthetic, logging in for a general vibe check from time to time is warranted.
Another benefit of knowing what’s coming down the trend pipeline is that it helps you streamline your wardrobe. The ability to discern between evergreen pieces and passing trends that – while fun – are here one day and gone the next is helpful. Remixing classics with more on-trend pieces is the stuff of iconic style (think Jane Birkin and Anya-Taylor Joy). So staying abreast of trends is, at a minimum, essential to keeping outfits tight and style on point.

Burgundy Is the New Black
2024 has got a new neutral, and it doesn’t resemble a cosmic abyss. Deep burgundy rose to fame on 2024 runways and will no doubt be adopted by even the most fervent, beige-loving minimalists in the new year. Somehow evoking both old money and voluptuous romance, the shade is universally flattering and pairs well with just about everything. Worn via a cashmere sweater or elegant silk gown, burgundy as the new black is here, and we’re over the m(ar)oon.

Maeve Square Neck Bell Sleeve Sweater, $98
Everlane The Ribbed Mock Neck Midi Dress, $198
Metallic-verse
Metallics are picking up speed in 2024, in both the silver and the gold varieties. Seen on runways at Ganni and Ralph Lauren, metallics are having a big moment, and we expect it to continue throughout the year. Go bold with a showstopping one-piece or dip your toes in with a metallic silver clutch, and sparkle your way all through the new year.
Anthropologie Sleeveless Heather Shine Draped Back Midi Dress, $98
Loeffler Randall Brit Metallic Pleated Clutch-On-Chain, $195
Show Me Your Mumu Bam Bam Bell Pant, $146
House of Harlow 1960 x Revolve Kalina Midi Dress, $178
Nipped/Tucked
2024 marks the return of the focal-point waist, and feminine girlies are rejoicing in droves. Oversized everything has had its turn in recent years, and now we’re coming back to a more svelte, nipped silhouette for the new year. An overt nod to the hourglass figure, it makes sense that we’re seeing cinched waists along with this return to femininity. It’s elegant and timely – fitting, really.
Mango Double-Breasted Suit Blazer, $200
Reformation Sai Fit-And-Flare Maxi Dress, $218
Hill House Home The Sabrina Dress, $178
The Future Is Halternecked
Another 2024 trend called up from the past, the halterneck is back to bless everything from wardrobes to boardrooms. From maxi dresses to argyle tops, the sexy silhouette is lauded for its versatility and applicability. A boon to those who love showing off their lovely shoulders, the halterneck is lending its magical abilities abundantly this year.
Ganni Graphic Argyle Cotton Halter Top, $185
Norma Kamali Halter Turtle Fishtail Gown, $195
Anthropologie Halter Open-Back Midi Dress, $108
The Big Short
Short styles can be a bit schizophrenic – with vastly disparate personalities (are we doing hot pants or bermuda shorts for the girls night? Very different vibes). But in 2024, the trend is clear. Shorts are big, (paradoxically) long, and super sporty chic. Seen on the legs of leading celebrities and influencers alike (we see you, Hailey Bieber and Tze Shin), long baggy shorts are the it girl ‘fit of 2024, and can actually be quite charming.
A slimmer variant has also popped up via the bermuda and pedal pusher varieties, though not quite as pervasively. Sandy Liang showed us how it’s done in a very “90’s retro” look for her Spring 2024 show. In either silhouette, we’re embracing a longer length for 2024, and channeling our inner Insta baddie while we’re at it.
Hudson Jeans Amelia Mid-Rise Bermuda Shorts, $155
Triarchy Ms. Cali Cut-Off Denim Cargo Shorts, $255
BDG Denim Longline Board Short, $59
Age of Opulence
In 2024, opulent elegance is the name of the game. This bougie trend comprises everything from operacore (think velvet evening gowns with crystal accents) to elevated ballet aesthetic (silk bows and Miu Miu flats), and even the gothic/dark romance movement that’s been building as of late. In other words, lace and jewels with diamond-encrusted shoes, and we just can’t get enough. But then, that’s kind of the point, isn't it?
Maeve Sweetheart Velvet Mini Dress, $178
ASOS DESIGN Velvet Mini Smock Dress, $70
DÔEN Bernadine Pintuck Lace Blouse, $238
All that Glitters
Just when we thought glitzy, ritzy glam would never announce a comeback tour. If you love shimmer, 2024 runways are here to answer your extra-bedazzled prayers. Sparkles and glitter were everywhere in the form of sequin gowns and rhinestone blazers. In 2024, strong women are celebrating their femininity, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have our shiny cake, and eat it too.
Anthropologie Sequin Bow Bodysuit, $98
Morning Lavender Samira Sequin Maxi Dress, $81
Anthropologie Sequin Gold Sequin Party Bag, $128
My Chick Plaid
Internet plaiddies will tell you that, in 2024, tartan is back – with a vengeance. A pattern usually reminiscent of fireside chats and LL Bean catalogs, plaid is now a bonafide fashion statement. Not widely seen since Alicia Silverstone’s Clueless days, tartan is now showing up on everything from trenches to wrap-around skirts. Like so many other ‘90s trends over recent years, plaid has re-entered the chat.
Avec Les Filles Mixed-Plaid Velvet Blazer, $148
Everlane The ReWool Way-High Drape Pant, $148
En Saison Demi Plaid Belted Coat, $224
