Slain Uvalde Teacher Called Her Husband When She Was Shot But He Was Detained And Escorted Away When He Tried To Go In To Save Her

There have been multiple accounts since that day showing how the local police utterly failed to protect the children. The Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said the officers could have stopped the shooter within minutes but they "decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children." There is even footage being released of the law enforcement officials inside Robb Elementary, but they didn't even enter the classrooms where the shooter was actively killing people.

Eva Mireles Called Her Husband When She Was Shot but He Was Detained and Escorted Away

Another harrowing detail from that day comes from Eva Mireles, one of the fourth grade teachers who died trying to protect her students in the classroom. During a Texas Senate hearing about the police's response to the shooting, McCraw said Mireles called her husband Ruben Ruiz, an Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) officer, when she was shot and told him that she was dying.

“What happened to him as he tried to move forward into the hallway, he was detained and they took his gun away from him and escorted him off the scene," McCraw said.

Ruiz was stopped by local law enforcement from saving his own wife, made even worse by the fact that they waited a full hour before apprehending the shooter and stopping him from killing innocent people.

Mireles' daughter paid tribute to her mother on social media, saying, "Mom, you are a hero." The grief she and her father are experiencing are beyond belief.
