James Stewart And Gloria McLean: The Greatest Love Story Of Hollywood’s Golden Age
James "Jimmy" Stewart and Gloria McLean's love story is proof that it's never too late to find your soulmate.
Ever scroll through social media and see the constant posts about how women "expire" after 30? I'm sure you have, and it's discouraging to see if you're a single woman who desires marriage. Scrolling through X will have you feeling like there's no hope in love for anyone. Then, you come across stories like James "Jimmy" Stewart and Gloria McLean’s romance, and you're suddenly reminded that it's never too late to find your soulmate.
The Man Behind the Iconic Smile
You may know Jimmy for his iconic role in It’s a Wonderful Life, where he made all of us re-evaluate our life choices on Christmas Eve. Jimmy wasn’t just the goody two-shoes George Bailey that we knew and love. He was, unsurprisingly, Hollywood’s quintessential bachelor for much of his career. Yes, he was a total heartthrob, but the actor was still a military hero and family man at heart.
Jimmy could have any woman he wanted. He had dated a whole parade of Hollywood’s leading ladies before Gloria, including Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner, and Marlene Dietrich, to name a few. He was one of the most desired men in the industry but, for a while, still struggled to find “the one” – until he met model and actress Gloria McLean.
The Love Story Begins
You're probably wondering why he chose Gloria. It all started at a dinner party, a simple get-together hosted by actor Gary Cooper. It was a few years after the actor returned from serving in World War II. Suddenly, in walks 29-year-old Gloria McLean with her brunette hair and green eyes. Jimmy, 10 years her senior, didn’t waste time – and who could blame him? Despite being divorced with two kids (a major deal breaker according to red pill Twitter – cue eyeroll), Jimmy said that "it was love at first sight."
According to TheMusicHall.org, Jimmy not only had to win Gloria's heart – he also had to gain approval of her dog. “I could tell right off that she was a thoroughbred…" he recalled, "the kind of girl I had always dreamed of. But first I had to woo her dog. I bought him steaks. Patted him. Praised him. It got to be pretty humiliating, but we finally got to be friends. I was free to court Gloria.”
On August 9, 1949, when Jimmy was 41, the two got married and he adopted Gloria's kids from her previous marriage. The couple went on to have twins in 1951, but the delivery was difficult. Gloria had to spend one month in the hospital, with her nurses telling reporters, ”I’ve never seen such an outpouring of love and concern. Mr. Stewart wouldn’t leave her bedside. When Mrs. Stewart was ready to be discharged, he was so excited that he nearly drove his car into the lobby. We got his wife ready, then he took off in a mad dash. But he had forgotten to put her in the car!”
What Makes Their Love Story Different
Hollywood marriages, especially in the golden age, are infamous for their instability – cheating rumors, messy divorces, and heartbreaks. But the Stewarts made it work for 44 years. They had several dogs during their long relationship, including two adorable golden retrievers named Kelly and Judy. However, it was known that Jimmy absolutely loved his golden retriever, Beau.
In 1985, the actor said about his life, “I’ve had so many blessings and good fortune. Gloria and the children continue to bring me enormous pleasure. On the whole, it’s been a darn wonderful life.”
Their relationship reminds us that real, lasting love isn’t about following trends or checking boxes. It’s about connection. It’s about commitment. And honestly, it’s about seeing someone for who they are and still seeing the beauty in them, flaws and all. Gloria wasn’t someone with "baggage" like what X would have you believe; she was a mother, a partner, a woman who found happiness in a private life away from the cameras. And that was exactly what Jimmy needed and wanted, so she gave him everything.
Author Jeannie MacDonald of TheMusicHall said she saw the couple once while attending their church at Beverly Hills. She described them as down-to-earth, always sticking to each other. After Gloria passed away in 1994, it’s said that Jimmy was never the same. "By all accounts, Jimmy was lost without her," MacDonald wrote. "Retreating from public life, he secluded himself at home, and in December of 1996, reportedly opted not to replace the battery in his pacemaker, preferring to let nature take its course."
His death in 1997 was marked with the profound words, "I’m going to be with Gloria now."
