The reality is, if you want to live a comfortable life, you most likely have to work. But honestly, work doesn’t have to feel dreadful. Not all of us can have what might be our dream job, but we can still make the most of where we are now. If you’re feeling discouraged in your workplace, maybe all you need to do is liven things up a bit and change your routine. Try these different tips to give you a new outlook at your job.

Organize and Clean Your Workspace

Maybe it’s time for you to clear everything out of your desk and junk drawers. Trying to accomplish things in the midst of an unorganized mess makes everything more negative and difficult. Just take a day or a lunch break to pull everything out of your desk or workstation and reorganize it. But before putting everything back in its place, wipe everything down and sanitize every nook and cranny.

Is it time to invest in some organizational aids? Find some drawer organizers, racks for holding or sorting papers, and cute new pen holders.

Upgrade Your Space

They say that retail is a form of therapy, and this might also apply here. If you’re in a rut at work, maybe it’s time for a few subtle changes that could make all the difference. Just like wearing a new outfit can bring you confidence, changing up your environment can do the same thing. Make your office space a place that you enjoy. Add décor that feels pleasant to you. This could be a new chair, lighting, desk décor, a plant, a beautiful calendar, or pretty work supplies. Making your office fun and cute will make you feel refreshed and excited to work.

Another option to change up your workspace is to add a standing desk or a treadmill for your desk. This will allow you to stand up and move more during your work day to keep you feeling awake and energetic and healthy (sitting is the new smoking, they say).

Identify Your Pitfalls Throughout the Day

If work has got you stressed out 24/7, it might be time to evaluate your methods and your approach. What parts of your day are causing you the most stress? Do you tend to procrastinate on your work? What things take up the majority of your time during the day? Start considering these things and adjust as necessary. Maybe you’re always late getting to work because you don’t wake up on time. This makes the rest of the day worse since you can't catch up with yourself. If this is a recurring issue, set your alarm earlier (and actually get out of bed!) to give yourself extra time, or go to bed earlier the night before.

Maybe the problem is that you aren’t organizing your work correctly so you aren’t getting things done. When the day begins, make a to-do list and complete them from most important to least important. Try responding to all your emails in a batch instead of stopping your current task and replying as they come in. Try not to waste time by ignoring the things you don’t really feel like doing – just get them done and out of the way. No matter what the issue is, identify it and face it head-on.

Set Work Goals for Yourself

If you feel like every day at work is the same, try setting goals for yourself. These can be small or big goals. Your employer will also like this because it shows that you’re doing your best to stay motivated and doing something in the company’s interest.

ClickUp recommends these 10 goals you could set for yourself in a work environment:

  1. Take a course to sharpen your skills

  2. Learn a new tool (or 5)

  3. Improve your public speaking and presentations

  4. Research other departments

  5. Improve team collaboration and communication skills

  6. Build your network

  7. Research a competitor

  8. Get better at time management

  9. Find new challenges in your role

  10. Become a business owner

Some smaller goals might be arriving at work five minutes early, dressing nicely for work, doing the tasks you like the least first thing in the morning, speaking up in a meeting, setting some healthy boundaries, or volunteering to take on an extra responsibility.

Closing Thoughts
