How The “Burnt Toast” Mindset Is Helping People Feel More Free And Grateful
Keirsten says her life “has gotten exponentially better once she started leaning into” the "burnt toast theory.''

Keirsten – a writer and content creator on TikTok who gives big sister advice – had something to share with all of us. She said the “burnt toast” mindset improved her life. “Burnt toast theory is the idea that, in the morning, you burn your toast,'' Kiersten said, "so you have to make a second piece of toast. And as a result, you miss a terrible car accident."
“It's the thought that every inconvenience that happens to you is really conspiring in your favor for your good to almost give you a second chance at life,” she continued. It’s looking at the bright side even if there isn’t one to be found. The silver lining is trusting the process because we’re being kept safe from a catastrophe, or something better awaits us. For many of us, this phenomenon could be thanks to God; for others, they call that fate, the universe, luck, etc. Science can’t explain it, sure, but science can at least prove that our beliefs are so powerful that they have the ability to change our biology and behavior. Think placebo or the “lucky girl syndrome.”
You can apply this burnt toast mindset to so many things, and in a world that’s becoming increasingly nihilistic, I think it’s healthy to do so. “So in your dating life, this looks like somebody [ghosting] you,” Keirsten said. “Great, they've spared you from their inability to communicate.”
You got a flat tire and couldn’t make it to that event? Burnt toast. Maybe you were safer at home. Didn’t get the job you wanted? Burnt toast! Perhaps you're going to receive a different offer elsewhere. The reason why this is so freeing is because we’re releasing the need to control a situation. We’re surrendering, and we’re accepting the present moment. It feels lighter. Instead of a more nihilistic mindset (a growing philosophy), we remain optimistic and present.
It's the thought that every inconvenience that happens to you is really conspiring in your favor.
Here’s a real-life example that shook everyone to their core recently. This week, a panel broke off a plane (Boeing 737-9 Max). Alaska Airlines passengers described the flight as "a trip from hell," and one of the guys close to the panel had his shirt and phone sucked out. They were 16,000 feet in the air.
However, there were two empty seats right next to the panel. Turns out, two of the people reportedly missed their flights. One even shared the receipts on X by posting a screenshot of his missed flight. Streamer @SnipedSox said, "I was one of the two passengers that missed the flight & I can confirm this is pretty accurate. But also 100% God’s Grace. Feeling extremely blessed & thankful right now." If that's not a miracle – or burnt toast – then I don't know what is.
