"The Haunted Rug" Explained: Cadaver Dogs Sent To TikToker's Home After Finding Buried Rug In Backyard

Katie Santry has been experiencing some terrifying moments at her house, which she believes is haunted. Her story went so viral that it sent social media into a frenzy, and several news reporters came to her home to share her story.

In a series of videos, Santry reveals her beliefs that someone – or something – has been tampering with her belongings. “I think my house is haunted, and I’m freaking out. Like, I’m literally shaking,” Santry says, showing viewers her sunroom.

She explains how she’s used the space to work every day, with everything in its place. But one morning, she walked in, and the laptop screen was shattered, and objects were strewn about. What truly shook Santry, however, was the mysterious rug buried in her backyard that her family found when they were trying to build a fence. “Why was that there?” she asks.

Maybe the carpet, which is buried about two and a half feet underground, contained a dead body. And when she couldn’t get it out of the ground, Santry had a simple solution: “We’re just going to pack that dirt right back down and hope that little ghost isn’t mad at me anymore.” TikTok was riveted, and people pleaded for her to call the police, so she listened. The officers came but told her they could not put resources into something they couldn’t identify, leaving it up to Santry and her husband to decide whether to dig up the rug or not. They told their followers they would dig it up but realized soon after that it was too much work. 

Shortly after, Santry updated her loyal followers, saying, “Millions of you are invested.” She didn’t expect her spooky saga to blow up like this, especially since she was heading out of town for work. With people now volunteering to bring over an excavator just for the plot, Santry weighs the odds: “What are the chances it’s a dead body? Probably low. What are the chances it’s a bag of money? I’d like that better.”

Story of the House and Neighbor

Santry spoke with the listing agent, who had contacted the daughter of the family who owns the home. Santry learned that the daughter was unaware of what the rug was, and when asked about dead pets, she mentioned they had many dogs, all cremated. “So she does not think there is a buried dog,” Santry explained, adding a touch of exasperation, “So what is going to happen next, you impatient little b*tches? He’s going to drive her *ss to the nursing home where her 90 and 95-year-old mother and father live and bury them for answers."

Santry also found out about the tragic death of the next-door neighbor just days after Santry moved in. She realized that her laptop had mysteriously broken on the same day her next-door deceased neighbor’s house was boarded up. Santry began to wonder if her deceased neighbor was haunting her.

Homicide Detectives Get Involved

Eventually, homicide detectives called Santry, expressing interest in investigating the matter. “They want to come out with cadaver dogs,” she told her followers.

When the police arrived, the tension was palpable. Santry documented the whole ordeal live, sharing that the cadaver dogs had hit the spot where the rug was found. “Oh my God, both dogs hitting on the hole,” she exclaimed.

During the live session, she expressed her mounting anxiety, saying, “I cried on TikTok live... My anxiety is so high.”

What Did They Find? 

The next day, they sent people to excavate the hole. What did they find? Just a dirty, old rug with some rubber. No body, no treasure, just a grimy piece of fabric that left Santry feeling a mix of relief and confusion. “The mystery of the effing rug is solved, and there is no body,” she stated, clearly shaken but grateful. “Honestly, let’s praise the Lord. There’s no body. I can stay in my house.”

Still, Santry had many questions left unanswered. Why had the dogs alerted them? And who broke her laptop? “There’s no body, but who broke my laptop?” she kept asking.

As the story gained traction online, the comment section exploded with theories. One user named Amy suggested that “the rug is evidence, and the body is somewhere else.” Another added, “Someone got murdered on the rug. Decayed on there. They got rid of the body somewhere else, and the killer buried the evidence (the rug). That’s my theory.”

In the end, Santry’s relief at discovering there was no body was tempered by the lingering mysteries surrounding her home. She joked, “It’s almost Halloween. Do I need a psychic to come to my house? I don’t know."

As Santry continues to share her life with her followers, it’s clear that most followers are not satisfied with the answer and are convinced that there's more to the story.
