Glamour Focuses On Selena Gomez's Weight For Her Birthday, Fans Say It Was Done In "Poor Taste"

The audience is not happy about how Glamour UK chose to celebrate Selena Gomez's birthday.

On July 22, Selena Gomez celebrated her 32nd birthday.

Naturally, magazines paid tribute to her, but Glamour UK took it a step further. Instead of simply wishing her a happy birthday, they shifted the focus to her body by using an unflattering image of her, accompanied by a quote about her weight. It may not have been their intention, but it does seem shady to me. Especially when the quote they chose was about her eating a good amount of food, which read, "So I be trying to stay skinny, but I went to Jack in the Box, and I got four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings, and a spicy chicken sandwich."

In their caption, they added, "Her journey to self-acceptance and powerful stance against body shaming reminds us all that beauty transcends size. We love you, Queen Selena." The irony is that a magazine advocating for "body positivity" is doing the exact opposite by focusing on her weight on a day that has absolutely nothing to do with it.

And even if they were trying to be kind, why didn't they choose a better quote from Gomez about her body image? She had an even better quote with Glamour UK from 2022. “Self-confidence is still something I work on daily, but when I stopped trying to conform to society’s unrealistic standards of beauty, my perspective entirely shifted," she said.

Glamour could have focused on Gomez's other birthday achievements, like winning the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for Emilia Pérez or the Emmy nominations her show Only Murders in the Building got.

The comment section pretty much sums up my thoughts about this:

Gomez has been facing a lot of heat recently. Social media critics say she's an "Amber Heard 2.0" who stalks Justin Bieber. She has faced constant hate comments regarding her physique because she no longer mirrors her teen body. Her love life is scrutinized because she's dating the unpopular Benny Blanco. Okay, the last part I kind of understand – he's weird and gives me the ick.

But regardless, Gomez is finally comfortable in her own skin. In an Instagram Story earlier this year, she wrote, “Today I realized I will never look like this again…”

She continued, “I’m not perfect, but I am proud to be who I am… Sometimes I forget it’s ok to be me.”
