Erin Moriarty Breaks Silence About Her Appearance And Plastic Surgery Comments

Erin Moriarty, who plays the superhero Starlight in the hit show The Boys, has finally spoken out about her appearance following plastic surgery rumors.

Moriarty, 30, went viral in 2023 after fans noticed the difference in her appearance compared to the show's first season, which premiered in 2019. At the beginning of The Boys, Moriarty had rounder, fuller cheeks. Today, she boasts sharper cheekbones and fuller lips, though she's never stated she had cosmetic work done.

I feel like everyone overreacted. She looks different, but Moriarty looks perfectly fine and pretty in her untouched Getty photos and Instagram selfies.

And while we do need to speak out against the plastic surgery industry and its tendency to prey on women's insecurities, targeting Moriarty and making cruel jokes about her appearance can't be justified. Nevertheless, the actress reflected on harsh comments in her latest interview with the New York Times.

“For a few months, I thought my career was over,” she admitted, “because there was so much attention brought to something that I was told never to address.” The increased attention resulted in more paparazzi surveillance and a surge in even more social media comments.

On the bright side, women began contacting Moriarty to share their own stories on bullying. “I had left it on a note where I’d explicitly said that I had been heartbroken by the comments,” she said. “Now, I’m not heartbroken. I’m galvanized.”

Moriarty became the subject of negative comments in 2023, and the internet incessantly criticized her looks, including media personality Megyn Kelly, who accused the actress of being "addicted" to plastic surgery.

On The Megyn Kelly Show, the former Fox News journalist claimed that Moriarty was an example of the “social illness” of young women’s “addiction” to cosmetic procedures. "More and more young women are doing this," she said. "It’s not about an objection to plastic surgery, it’s about an obsession with turning yourself into this fake version of yourself... I find it like a sign of mental illness. I really want to get in the heads of these young girls and say, 'Please don’t do this.'"

Kelly continued to comment on a photo of Moriarty, saying, "I thought it was just an AI-generated face... but apparently it’s real.”

The Good Father star took to Instagram following Kelly's rant to say she was heartbroken and horrified by the bullying. "We're all subject to levels of bullying throughout our lives, but I am horrified, and I felt that I deserved to take a second to address these things,” she wrote. “To receive a message about a disgustingly false, counterproductive to the degree of being ironically misogynistic video of Megyn Kelly commenting on the manner – to learn the widespread nature of this has left me horrified."

Moriarty said the ridiculed photo was from when she put on makeup and got ready for an event. "I remember feeling pretty," she added.

"This is becoming harassment," she continued, later adding she’s “horrified by the reaction, the reductive assumptions, and the aforementioned video that is a primary example of such harassment. It's broken my heart. You've broken my heart."

Moriarty may be playing a strong superhero in one of the biggest shows, but she's still a human. Her co-star, Karen Fukuhara, told the Times, “I was really worried about her for a period of time. Nobody is bulletproof, even though I think she’s close to it.”
