One of the most significant controversies of recent political history is the alleged collusion between Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. This controversy has sparked numerous investigations, sparked heated debates, and left a lasting imprint on American politics. In July 2016, the FBI initiated a counterintelligence investigation named "Crossfire Hurricane" to explore links between Trump campaign associates and Russian officials. The controversy escalated with the release of the Steele dossier, a collection of intelligence reports suggesting a series of connections between Trump's campaign and the Russian government.

In May 2017, following the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed as a special counsel to continue the investigation. The Mueller investigation, lasting nearly two years, resulted in a comprehensive report that became the centerpiece of the Trump-Russia controversy. The Mueller Report, released in April 2019, found that "the Russian government interfered in the 2016 presidential election in sweeping and systematic fashion." It identified numerous contacts between Trump campaign officials and individuals with ties to Russia. However, the report did not conclusively establish that the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government's election interference activities.

The report claimed there were multiple instances where Trump may have potentially obstructed justice during the investigation, but it did not make a legal determination, leaving that to Congress. The controversy continued to smolder. The Trump administration and its supporters vehemently denied collusion, viewing the investigation as a political "witch hunt." Critics, on the other hand, argued that the report's findings were a cause for concern and warranted further investigation.

The impeachment proceedings against Trump, although primarily focused on his dealings with Ukraine, also highlighted the Russia controversy. The first impeachment in December 2019 charged Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, linking to his attempts to solicit foreign interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Trump was acquitted by the Senate in February 2020. Investigations related to this issue have led to several indictments and convictions of high-ranking Trump associates, including Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, and Michael Flynn, his former national security advisor, for crimes unrelated to collusion.

However, a few years later, after legacy media companies spent endless months calling Trump a traitor to his own country who colluded with Russia, new information has been released to show that it was all fabricated from the very beginning.

Durham Report Shows Hillary Clinton Planted a False Story About Donald Trump Colluding with Russia

After four years of meticulous inquiry, special counsel John Durham's long-awaited report was released, revealing a critical review of the FBI's investigation into the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election. The report, which has sparked a new wave of debate about politicization within the Justice Department and FBI, does much to support former President Donald Trump's long-held assertions of being unfairly targeted. Referred to as the Durham Report, it scrutinizes a purported plan by Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign to link Trump to Russia, concluding that the actions "did not, all things considered, amount to a provable criminal offense."

Durham, appointed by Trump's attorney general, William P. Barr, was tasked with reexamining the conduct of government agents investigating possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian interference efforts. Durham's investigation focused on whether any crimes occurred in handling an unverified piece of U.S. intelligence, suggesting that Russia was aware of a Clinton campaign strategy to tarnish her opponent, Trump, by associating him with the country. The intelligence, which was never corroborated, piqued the interest of then-CIA Director John Brennan, who briefed the Obama White House and referred the matter to the FBI.

The crux of Durham's report criticizes the FBI for its hastened investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane, based on "raw, unanalyzed, and uncorroborated intelligence." It highlights the agency's decision to investigate Trump's campaign swiftly while taking a cautious approach on allegations related to Hillary Clinton, the then-Democratic presidential candidate. This discrepancy, Durham asserts, caused the FBI "severe reputational harm."

Durham's report provides multiple instances of what he terms "confirmation bias" within the FBI. These include the bureau's decision to proceed with the investigation despite a lack of corroborative information from the Intelligence Community, agents disregarding information that exonerated key suspects, and the inability to substantiate any allegations in the infamous Steele dossier.

Durham's report includes a revelation that he interviewed the former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in May 2022. Clinton expressed sympathy for Durham's task, describing it as "really sad" and acknowledging the necessity to "go down every rabbit hole."

Nevertheless, Durham maintains that the uncorroborated intelligence should have prompted the FBI to question whether it was being manipulated by a political opponent to pursue allegations against the Trump campaign.

The report's findings seem to echo Trump's long-standing argument that he was the victim of a politicized investigation. Following the report's release, Trump claimed vindication, stating on social media that it proved the American public had been "scammed." The FBI's conduct during the investigation was called "seriously deficient." This deficiency, according to Durham, could have been prevented if FBI employees had adhered to their "own principles regarding objectivity and integrity."

The implications of the Durham report are significant and multi-faceted. It supports Trump's claims of being unfairly targeted, which could offer him and his supporters a sense of vindication. It also critiques the way high-profile investigations are handled, calling for the creation of a position within the FBI to provide oversight of politically sensitive investigations.

This report fuels further debate about the politicization of justice and law enforcement institutions. The FBI has long been accused of being biased and ineffective, and this sharp critique of the federal organization only bolsters that belief in many citizens.

Although critics claim that this doesn't fully exonerate Trump from his so-called collusion with Russia, even progressive media sites and news anchors are admitting that this is a devastating blow to Clinton and the FBI. Jake Tapper of CNN, who has been a longtime critic of Trump and the Republican party, said although the Durham report "might not have produced everything that Republicans were hoping for, it is regardless devastating to the FBI and, to a degree, it does exonerate Donald Trump."

“At the time of the opening of Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI did not possess any intelligence showing that anyone associated with the Trump campaign was in contact with Russian intelligence officers at any point during the campaign,” the report reads.

Many content creators, independent journalists, and social media users are not surprised at all by this finding, but they are disappointed with how little chance there is for characters like Clinton and the FBI to be held accountable for their unconscionable actions. Regardless of what side of the political spectrum you sit on, you can recognize that this is a grave injustice directed at a sitting president—and if the tables were turned, there would be riots in the streets and civil unrest until people were behind bars. Of course, all the legacy media publications who are reporting on the Durham report now (CNN, New York Times, CBS, etc) will never retract the many articles they wrote demanding that Trump be charged (or worse, behind bars) for false accusations that were perpetuated by a federal organization.
