DC's Far-Left "Squad" Just Suffered Its First Major Loss
Far-left activist Jamaal Bowman lost the Democratic primary to his centrist challenger, George Latimer, dealing a decisive blow to D.C.'s progressive "squad."

A far left-wing group of Democrats known as “the squad” emerged in 2018 with the elections of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, among others.
Jamaal Bowman was elected soon after in 2020, running on issues like climate activism and "Medicare for All," suggesting the squad and its "progressive" ideals were gaining momentum, but his recent loss might suggest otherwise.
Many commentators attributed Bowman's loss to the growing extremism of leftist policies and their refusal to condemn Hamas.
Bowman, in particular, voted against military aid to Israel and called Israel’s military operation a “genocide.” He also falsely claimed that Hamas did not torture or rape women during the October 7 attack, which he eventually was forced to retract.
This put him at odds with many of his Jewish constituents. He also infamously pulled a fire alarm in a congressional building to obstruct the voting process and then lied about it.
Nevertheless, AOC heavily endorsed his campaign, but it wasn't enough to save him.
Besides Bowman, all other elected members of the squad have been able to survive primary challenges from establishment Democrats, but far-leftist Cori Bush, also a squad member, might be next on the chopping block. Another loss could signal that some Democrat voters are pushing back against the party's growing extremism.
