After years of speculation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is finally getting a revival, with Sarah Michelle Gellar leading the charge.

Gellar recently took to Instagram to confirm that she’s been in discussions about a Buffy revival for years. She shared, “So... you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me. Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential ‘Buffy’ revival.” What started as a casual coffee meeting turned into a four-hour conversation about the cultural impact of the show.

Unlike the ill-fated 2018 reboot attempt that never made it past the development stage, this project appears to be going somewhere. The series will be a continuation, with Gellar’s Buffy playing a supporting role to a new Slayer. “I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right,” Gellar explained. “This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

Details are still scarce, but here’s what’s been confirmed, as reported by CBR:

  • The project is in development at Hulu.

  • Chloé Zhao (Eternals, Nomadland) is set to direct the pilot.

  • Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Fringe, Prodigal Son) are involved as writers.

  • Buffy Summers will appear in a supporting capacity, with a new Slayer leading the story.

  • Joss Whedon is not involved.

  • Dolly Parton, who quietly produced the original show through her company Sandollar, is on board as a producer.

The upcoming Hulu revival has a high bar to clear, but if done right, it could introduce a whole new generation to the Slayerverse while giving longtime fans a reason to believe in Buffy again.

One thing’s for sure: if the Hellmouth is opening again, at least we know the one and only Buffy’s got our backs.
