Brigitte Bardot Says Feminism “Isn’t My Thing” And Defends Men

To younger American audiences, Brigitte Bardot might just register as a name from a past era, but in the 1960s, she was the global sex symbol. You'd think she'd be for feminism . As it turns out, Bardot never aligned herself with the movement, and six decades later, she still isn’t about to start. That much she made clear in a rare televised interview with French channel BFM, where the 90-year-old actress spoke from her home in the south of France. The former screen icon was asked about feminism and didn’t dance around it. “Feminism isn’t my thing,” she said. “I like men.” When the interviewer tried to push back, suggesting you can like men and be a feminist , Bardot shut it down with a simple “No.” In the same sit-down, Bardot also defended Gérard Depardieu , the 76-year-old actor accused of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior. One of those accusations, groping a set designer and an assistant while filming Les Volets Verts in 2021, just landed Depardieu an 18-month suspended sentence, a €20,000 fine, and a spot on the French sex offenders’ list. However, Bardot seems to think the punishment was too cruel. “Those who have talent and put their hands on a girl’s bottom are thrown in the gutter,” Bardot said. “We could at least let them get on with their lives. They can’t live anymore.” This isn’t new territory for Bardot. Back in 2018, she signed an open letter calling MeToo a “witch hunt” and claiming that actresses who speak out about harassment were only seeking “publicity.” Bardot’s comments may seem jarring to many, but the MeToo movement ruined innocent lives along the way.
