Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Seizures are the result of sudden, excessive electrical discharges in a group of brain cells, which can affect how a person appears or behaves during that time. Epilepsy can affect people at any age and can be triggered by various factors, such as genetic influence, head trauma, certain diseases, or brain conditions. While epilepsy is a serious and often life-altering condition, it is not typically a direct cause of death. However, people with epilepsy have a higher risk of accidents, suicide, and certain other medical conditions. Furthermore, Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) does occur, albeit relatively rarely, and is more common in people with frequent, uncontrolled seizures. As of 2021, SUDEP is estimated to occur in approximately 1 in 1,000 adults and 1 in 4,500 children with epilepsy each year.
